Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a high-speed digital data service. With ISDN you can transmit large amounts of data, voice and video signals over a single telephone line at higher speeds—and lower cost—than with any other digital service or analogue modem.

Typical ISDN applications…
ISDN is the perfect choice for any number of high-volume datacomm applications where faster data rates, lower prices and guaranteed data integrity are required:
  • Internet access and on-line service.
  • Remote-office routing.
  • Videoconferencing.
  • PC-to-PC screen sharing and collaboration.
  • Disaster recovery.

Also consider ISDN service when you need…
  • Datacomm service to more than one location.
  • Datacomm lines for just a few hours a day.
  • Simultaneous voice and data communications.
  • A high-speed backup line.

Is ISDN affordable?
Absolutely! ISDN is becoming more available throughout the world, and lower prices are expected well into the next century.

Three main reasons to consider ISDN:
  1. ISDN is a switched service. That means data connections are temporary, and the ISDN link is active only when you use it. The benefit? After a small monthly fee, you pay only for ISDN calls you make.
  2. ISDN supports flexible connections to multiple sites. Just like a regular telephone line, ISDN enables you to dial any ISDN location anywhere in the world!
  3. All-digital transmission means high performance. Because ISDN is an end-to-end digital service, you always have the full bandwidth available for data transmission.

Some background information about ISDN…
There are three kinds of ISDN service: Basic Rate Interface (BRI), Primary Rate Interface (PRI) and Multirate. PRI and Multirate service are typically used by large facilities to  support high-bandwidth applications such as PBX phone systems. These services are more expensive and therefore less widely available than BRI service.

The most common (and least expensive) ISDN service is BRI. Its usual application is combining voice and data circuits over one line between small-scale ISDN sites.
